ISLAMABAD: The Centre for Aerospace and Security Studies (CASS) held a seminar on Cyber and Space: Opportunities and Challenges for Pakistan at Serena Hotel, on 11^th December 2019. The event was attended by senior serving and retired officials, diplomats, and academics, besides a large number of the general public. The Minister of Science and Technology, Mr. Fawad Chaudhry, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion, in his opening remarks said that there are continuous developments in scientific knowledge, but their practical applications are largely under-utilized. Highlighting the importance of cyberspace, the Minister stated that it is an indispensable aspect of modern life. In today’s digital world, the cyber technologies augmented by the services provided by space applications are not only vital to the needs of common citizens but also to commercial, administrative,social and security needs of any state.

President CASS, Air Chief Marshal (retired) Kaleem Saadat said that cyber warfare is an emerging phenomenon in international relations with state orchestrated computer network attacks occurring with increasing frequency and scale. He also stated that countries considered access to space to be their right and that the involvement of private-sector companies is providing low-cost access to space.

Chairman Strategic Policy Planning Cell, Dr. Moeed Yusuf, who was the Guest of Honor, appreciated the role of CASS in creating awareness on issues related to cyber and space. In his remarks, he said that the ability of countries to invest in cyber and space was going to be very different depending on their economic prowess. He posed two challenges: how will the world be brought together to co-operate on avoiding the massive devastation that space and cyber could have for human-kind, and what are the legal regimes internationally and domestically to manage this space?

In his keynote address, Ambassador (Retd) Zamir Akram, while highlighting the ongoing military developments related to space, underscored the importance of building a credible space deterrence that could secure Pakistan’s space-based assets in the future. Chairman SUPARCO in his presentation provided an overview of Pakistan’s space program; Air Marshal (Retd) Waseem Uddin shared his views on the significance and benefits of a space program.

The second session covered cyber aspects with different speakers sharing their views on cyber realities and its disruptive potential, challenges for Pakistan, and dynamics of cyber and space economics.

In his concluding remarks, President CASS once again highlighted deficiencies at the national level that must be addressed on priority, to ensure that Pakistan is not left behind in this field, and socio-economic benefits of new technologies are made available to the common public. In the end, he thanked the Chief Guest, the speakers and all the participants for engaging proactively in the discussions.

ISLAMABAD, 12^th March 2019:  7th Edition of Cyber Secure Pakistan (CSP) was launched by Pakistan Information Security Association (PISA) today 12^th March 2019 in National Library of Pakistan, Islamabad. The Conference was attended by all stakeholders from government to private sector and from law enforcement to civil society. Theme of this Edition was “Cybercrime vs Cyber Security – A dialogue to clear the blur.”

Theme of the Conference was based upon the fact that Pakistan needs a national level cyber security legislation including national level cyber security law, policy, strategy and a CERT (Computer/Cyber Emergency Response Team) as a physical entity to achieve the objective of cyber resilience economy.

Senator Rubina Khalid, Chairperson of Senate Committee for IT and Telecom, Syed Kamal Shah, Chairman of Crime Stoppers Pakistan and Mr. Mujeeb ur Rehman were Guests of Honor at the Conference and its speakers and panelists include officials, representatives and dignitaries from public and private sector and also voices of civil society and focal persons of international digital platforms.

Based upon Conference theme a dialogue has been initiated on learned forum of industry experts to realize the urgent need of national cyber security legislation. Lack of cyber security awareness is the main reason of cyber crimes as a large number of internet users are unsecure. Conferences such as Cyber Secure Pakistan 2019 are playing a major role in spreading awareness about cyber security in Pakistan. This Edition has been launched successfully and further episodes of the Edition will be launched in Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and other mega cities nationwide.

First time in history of Pakistan PISA has also launched awards for InfoSec industry expert. Award name is “PISA Personage Award” and this year it has been awarded to Dr. Arshad Ali, Dr. Muhamamd Ashraf, Mr. Wahaj Siraj, Dr. Saad Zafar, Mr. Nazeer Vaid, Dr. Junaid Zaidi, Dr. Nassar Ikram, Dr. Shoab Khan, Barrister Zahid Jameel, Mr. Maajid Maqbool, Mr. Zahid Basheer Mirza and Syed Talha Habib. Conference was managed by NEMO and sponsored by Risk Associates, Govt. College of Women University Sialkot and IT Butler.

ISLAMABAD, 29^th March 2018: With the growing use of internet in every work of life and the current rapid transformation of ICTs enabled services especially in education, health and other walks of life, there is an urgent need to make the cyber space of Pakistan secure. Globally cyber security is the part of overall strategy to promote the use of latest technologies in good governance initiatives. The most recent global initiative in this regard is Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which has now become the real road map of development in Pakistan.

In the light of this background, there is an urgent need to adopt Cyber Security Policy & Strategy and to bring in place an Eco-System where all players of Cyber Security in Public and Private Sector could work together. Pakistan Information Security Association (PISA) headed by Mr. Ammar Jaffri, Former Addl Director General FIA is working for the promotion of Cyber Security in Pakistan since 2005 with the support of CIT.  Center of Information Technology (CIT) is twenty five years old Computer Science Degree Institution of a Govt Sector University and plus ten thousand IT Graduates from CIT are currently serving in different public and private sector organizations.

With this background an International Conference on Cyber Secure Pakistan Vision-2025 was organized on 29^th March 2018 in Pak China Friendship Center Islamabad. The Chief Guest of the Conference was Lt General (R) Nasser Janjua National Security Advisor to PM of Pakistan and attended by Ten Speakers from abroad including CEO Cyber Security Malysia and VP ICANN. Other Speakers of the Conference were VCs, Heads of Telecom Companies and Senior Officers from Government Organizations. Cyber Secure Pakistan 2018 was attended by all walks of life including students, public and private sector.

Several cyber security issues were highlighted in the conference and appropriate solutions were recommended. We need awareness of Cyber Security and Cyber Crime at grass root level, the conference was highly appreciated by the audience and encouraged the authorities to organize such conferences at all levels from bottom to top.

A special session was also the part of the conference which specifically focused on Cyber Security of Women and Girls in Pakistan. Young female participants were introduced to the cyber laws so they can report cyber crimes to Law Enforcement Agencies.

Law Enforcement Agencies and Government Officials at the conference suggested several reforms in our current cyber laws and policies. Lack of cyber security awareness is the main reason of cyber crimes as a large number of internet users are unsecure. Conferences such as Cyber Secure Pakistan 2018 are playing a major role in spreading awareness about cyber security in Pakistan.

The Prime Objectives of the Conference was to bring in place an ECO-SYSTEM where all Public and Private Sector Organizations could work together for a Cyber Secure Pakistan and establish their Computer Emergency Response Teams, CIT-CERT Coordination Center has been established to perform the following practices:

1. Train and build the capacity of public and private sectors organizations to establish their own CERTs (Low cost solutions)
2. Educate organizations and stake holders on the risks if they do not have CERT and benefits if they have CERTs
3. Issue cyber threat alerts and advisories to members of the CIT CERT Coordination center. So that they could remain secure from cyber-attacks.
4. Linking the members with regional and global CERTs for sharing knowledge and to adopt Pro-Active approach in Cyber Security.

He topped in Islamabad in AS level (first year of A-levels) (best across 3 subjects) Physics, Chemistry and Math, he also topped in A-Levels in North Pakistan, best across 3 subjects. Ramis Ali is a founding member of ‘Road to Humanity’ a social work society that helps the deserving people. He is a bright shining star of Pakistan, he is currently enrolled in NUST in Bachelors of Electrical Engineering, here is an interesting interview of Ramis Ali for our valued readers.

How did you manage to secure top positions in your study along with extracurricular activities?

Well, I believe studies and extracurricular go hand in hand.  You cannot just indulge in one and forget the other. No doubt, education has its own significance, but the experience gained via other ventures is equally essential in nurturing ones skills and abilities. Being a fan of cricket and volleyball, I always take out time on weekly basis for exercise and sport, for it not only keeps the mind sharp, but keeps one physically balanced and composed. Thus, involving in such skill-sharpening activities is more of necessity than the leisure part.

How do you think Science & Technology is changing our daily life?

Receiving Award for Distinction in A-levels at Roots College International Annual Ceremony at Convention Center.

Science and technology are exponentially changing since almost the past decade. Everything is evolving so rapidly, that not keeping up with the pace of it leaves one in great loss. Our lives are constantly changing, for each sunrise brings in new discoveries and inventions, making our lives easier, yet complex!

What is the impact of Social Media?

Social media has greatly influenced the way our society thinks.

Where it has made the world more connected, it has also brought along some adverse affects.  Circulation of false news, blind following of ‘trends’, compromising of privacy are a few to name. But again, the use of almost anything in the world, I believe, depends on the user. If utilized in a certain manner, social media may help to bring communities together to resolve their issues, to yield a common voice.

You are best across three, Physics, Chemistry and Math, What are your favorite topics in Physics and Chemistry?

Electricity and magnetism are some of the core chapters that I like in physics whereas Organic chemistry has always been a pleasure to study.

Please tell about “Road to Humanity”? How is it helping deserving people and what is your role in it?

I feel honour in taking up a responsibility, directing all my efforts and time towards achieving a certain task. Taking up a challenge, and getting it done is one of the best feelings in the world. Last year, we were faced with the challenge of establishing a student-charity organization, “Road to Humanity”. Through dedicated execution, we managed to successfully launch donation drives, visit to orphanages, ration drives and blood donations.

Usually Poets are imaginative but you have lots of achievements, how your interest developed in poetry and what are you bringing for readers in your upcoming book?

There are many ways in which one reacts to the outer crevices of our own immediate surroundings. I believe that God has gifted each one of us with the ability to assess and express ourselves. And I am blessed with the ability to observe and reflect to the varying scenarios around me.  To be able to make a quick assessment in any possible situation is a blessing. Over the years, this has had an impact on the way I think, and now, it feels ecstatic to be so close to publishing my first anthology of English poetry, Chroma, on which I have been working for the past two years.  Chroma, as the word suggests, is a plethora of emotions and observations, ranging from various scenarios of life, historic and ongoing events, and matters that affect our lives.

Who is your ideal and inspiration? Why?

Inspiration is something one can get from anyone or anything. My inspiration is not limited to a specific person or phenomenon. I am inspired by anything that touches my heart, something that has an effect on me. Feeling is what makes a soul lively. Human being is a plethora of emotions. To feel the emotions of others, the situation they may be going through, inspires me to the core of my heart.

What makes NUST best? Please share some moments and life of NUST?

At National Institute of Science and Technology (NUST)

NUST is one of the finest institutes of Pakistan, and it is a matter of great honour and blessing to be a part of it.  NUST has various salient features, making it one of its kinds. The innovative ambiance, the apex of competition, the diversity of people, and the fantastic infrastructure are some of the things that make NUST what it is. And all this really has an impact on the way we think, which may lead us to new horizons. Being a part of NUST is no less than a blessing. Proud to be a Nustian!

What improvements would you like to suggest for enhancing our Education System?

1) Establishment of renowned foreign university campuses

2) Revision and updating of current intermediate system

3) Creation of a fair environment for both A-levels and FSC students.

4) Solid steps to ameliorate government schools condition

What changes you wish to see in Pakistan?

We, the people of Pakistan, must strive to make Pakistan Great Again.

What are your suggestions for other students?

Being a student myself, I’d say that hard work always pays off in the end. It is not a cliché. Being disheartened over a bad time is only going to make things worse. So keep going, heads down, hopes high.

Only you know the struggle you have done, or are doing to get to your goals, and once you get there and look back from where you have come, believe me it is the best feeling in the world!

سوال: آپ شعبہ صحافت میں کیسے آئے؟ سب سے زیادہ کہاں سیکھنے کا موقع ملا؟ صحافت کے شعبے میں آنے کے بعد سوچ میں کیا تبدیلی آئی؟

جواب: جیسا کہ ہمارے معاشرے میں رائج ہے کہ والدین اپنے بچوں کو صر ف ڈاکٹر یا انجینئر بنانا چاہتے ہیں اور اب شاید ایم بی اے کا رجحان بھی شامل ہو گیا ہے ۔ میرے والد بھی مجھے ڈاکٹر کے روپ میں دیکھنا چاہتے تھے ۔ ابتدائی عمر سے یہ پیشہ ایسا ذہن پر چھایا کہ اپنے آپ سے پوچھنے کا خیال بھی دل میں نہ آیا کہ یاسین تم خود کیا بننا چاہتے ہو ؟ مگر شاید میں عام بچوں سے مختلف تھا اس لئے سخت گیر ماحول میں پرورش پانے کے باوجود اپنی اور کائنات کی کھوج میں تھا۔ انٹرسائنس کرتے ہوئے میرے اندر کا لکھاری جاگ گیا ۔ اخبارات میں طالب علموں کے صفحات پر میرے مضامین شائع ہونے لگے ۔ ”نوائے وقت “ بعد ازاں ”حر ّیت“ کے نوجوانوں اور بچوں کے صفحات پر چند مضامین اور کہانیاں شائع ہوئیں۔اس سے میرے قلم کو تقویت ملی اور ایسا لگا کہ شائد لکھنا ہی میرا اصل ہنر ہے ۔میڈیکل کالج میں داخلہ نہ ملا تو والد صاحب نے بی ایس سی کرنے کو کہا مگر میں نے پہلی بار ان کی بات نہ مانی اور بی ایس سی ایک سال کر کے چھوڑدیا۔اسی دوران میرا ریڈیو پاکستان آنا جانا شروع ہوا ۔ ”بزمِ طلبہ “نامی پروگرام میں بڑی آﺅبھگت ہوئی۔ صداکار کی حیثیت سے ابتداءمیں دو بار آڈیشن میں فیل ہو ا مگر لکھنے کا کام چل پڑا ۔ میں نے بی اے میں داخلہ لیا اور ریڈیو پروگراموں میں جُت گیا۔ والد ناراض ہو گئے ۔ وہ میرے ریڈیو جانے کے بھی سخت خلاف تھے ،مجھے گھر چھوڑنا پڑ گیا مگر میں نے ہمت نہ ہاری ۔ انتہائی سخت دن تھے۔ خوش قسمتی سے ریڈیو کے کمرشل پروگراموں اور ورلڈ سروس کے پروگراموں میں لکھنے اور بولنے کے مواقع ملتے چلے گئے ۔ میں نے کراچی کے ایک علاقے لیاقت آباد میں کرائیے کا مکان لیا اور گھر سے دور اکیلا رہنے لگا۔ بی اے پاس کیا اور ایم اے صحافت کی ۔ اسی دوران مختلف رسائل میں معاوضے کے ساتھ لکھنے لگا۔بعدازاں ”روپ“ اور ”دوشیزہ“میں سب ایڈیٹر کی حیثیت سے ملازمت کی ۔ گدھوں کی طرح کا م کیا ۔ میرا ارادہ ریڈیو پروڈیوسر بننے کا تھا ۔کنٹریکٹ کی بنیاد پر زمانہ طالب علمی ہی میں اسسٹنٹ پروڈیوسر کے طور پر ریڈیو پاکستان کراچی میں کام کیا ۔مجھے ریکارڈنگ اور پروگرام ایڈیٹنگ پر بھی عبور حاصل ہوگیا تھا۔ صحافت میں ایم اے کرتے ہی ریڈیو پر پروڈیوسر کی جاب کے لئے اپلائی کیا مگر تمام تر صلاحیت اور تجربہ رکھنے کے باوجود مجھے کراچی ڈومیسائل پر جاب نہ ملی ۔ میں بہت رویا ، بہت دنوں تک بڑا مایوس سا رہا ۔یہ ٹیلنٹ کا قتل تھا ۔ایسے لاکھوں قتل ہو چکے ہیں اور قاتلوں کی طرف کسی کو انگلی اُٹھانے کی ہمت بھی نہ ہوئی ۔مجھے ریڈیو کے کمرشل پروگراموں میں بہترین رائٹرز کے ایڈورٹائزنگ ایسوسی ایشن سے سالانہ ایوارڈز ملے ۔کراچی کے نوجوانوں میں میرانام ابھر کے سامنے آیا۔مجھے بہتریں مقرر ، شوز کے میزبان اور مزاح نگار کے ایوارڈز ملے۔ ریڈیو پاکستان کراچی کے بزمِ طلبہ کا پہلے ہی سال بہتریں مزاح نگار کا ایوارڈ ملا۔

مجھے فخر ہے کہ میرے لکھے خاکوں اور کمر شل پروگراموں میں اس دور کے صف اوّل کے صداکاروں نے صداکاری کی۔ مگر اس کے باوجودبھی مجھے فرزند ِ کراچی ہونے کے باعث ریڈیو پروڈیوسر کی ملازمت نہیں دی گئی ۔ ان دنوں مجھے ایم کیو ایم کی طرف سے بہت آفرز تھیں ۔ میرے کئی نوجوان ساتھی ایم کیوایم میں چلے گئے تھے جو بعدازاں ڈپٹی میئر ، ایم پی اے اور ایم این اے بنے۔مگر میں تعصب کا نشانہ بننے کے باوجود تعصب کے بینر تلے کام کرنے کے حق میں نہیں تھا۔ آ پ کو یہ جان کر حیرت ہوگی کہ میں کبھی زندگی میں کسی سیاسی یا ثقافتی جماعت کا رکن یا عہدیدار نہیں بنا۔میں نے خود اپنی ایک ثقافتی اور ادبی تنظیم بنائی تھی”فرینڈز فورم “ کے نام سے جس کے تحت ہم چند دوست مل کر ثقافتی اور ادبی پروگرام کیا کرتے تھے ۔کراچی کا وہ دور گواہ ہے کہ ہم نے کتنے بہترین پروگرام اس بینر تلے کئے ۔

پھر میں نے باقاعدہ طور پر پرنٹ میڈیا میں آنے کا فیصلہ کر لیا۔ ان دنوں ضیا ءالحق کے مارشل لاءکا راج تھا۔ سیاسی آزادی نہیں تھی چنانچہ شوبز کے رسالوں کا دور دورہ تھا ۔مجھے اخبارات سے زیادہ ماہانہ رسائل بھاتے تھے۔ میں نے فری لانس جرنلسٹ بننے کا فیصلہ کیا ۔ابتدائی دنوںمیں ”دوشیزہ “ ، ”روپ“ اور دیگر رسائل میں نوکری بھی کی مگر اس کا نقصان یہ تھا کہ میں پابند ہو جاتا تھاکہ محدود تنخواہ کے ساتھ ایک ہی رسالے کے لئے کام کروں۔میں فری لانس رائٹر بن گیا ۔ اگلے چند سالوں ہی میں کراچی کے تقریباً ہر رسالے میں میرے لکھے انٹرویوز ، مضامین، ڈائریز ، خبریں موجود ہوتی تھیں ۔میرے طنز و مزاح کا انداز سب کو بھایا۔ مجھے ہر رسالے کے لئے ہر مہینے چار سے چھ مضامین لکھنے ہوتے تھے۔اس لئے کئی قلمی نام بھی رکھنے پڑے ۔اس کے علاوہ ریڈیو کے لئے خاکے اور ڈرامے بھی لکھتا رہا۔کئی اداروں میں پبلک ریلیشنز آفیسر کی جاب بھی کی۔لکھ کر کمانا آسان نہیں ہوتامگر میں نے ”Limpid Creative Services“ کے نام سے ایک ادارہ بنایا اور فوٹوگرافی و رائٹنگ کو ساتھ ملایا۔میں آئیڈیاز کے ساتھ شوبز کے آرٹسٹوں کے ساتھ فوٹوگرافی کرتا اور اس ”تھیم“ کے مطابق فیچرز لکھتا ۔ یہ بالکل نیا انداز تھا جو سوشو کلچر میگزین میں بہت مقبول ہوا۔میں مصروف ترین رائٹر بن گیا۔ ”ٹی وی ٹائمز “، ٹی وی ٹیمپو، شوبز، روپ، صبح نو، فاصلہ، سلسلہ ، محور، شہر زاد، زیرلب اور پتہ نہیں کتنے رسائل میں میری تحریریں چھپتی تھیں ۔ اس زمانے میں یکسانیت کو توڑنے کے لئے میں نے انٹرویوز اور فیچرز میں نئے نئے تجربے کئے۔ آج 20 سال بعد بھی میں اپنے ان آئیڈیاز پر لوگوں کولکھتے دیکھتا ہوں تو زیر لب مسکرادیتا ہوں۔مجھے یہ اعزاز بھی حاصل ہے کہ ٹوکیوسے اردوزبان میں شائع ہونے والے پہلے اردو رسالے ”نوائے ٹوکیو“ کا ایڈیٹر رہا۔اسی طرح زراعت پر کراچی سے شائع ہونے والے اردو رسالے ” ایگری ریسرچ“ کابھی میں ایڈیٹر تھا۔میں خود ایک سہ ماہی رسالہ ”ریلیشنز انٹرنیشنل “نکالتاتھا جو پاکستان کے تمام سفارت اور کونسل خانوں کی سرگرمیوں کو شائع کرتا تھااور امپورٹ ایکسپورٹ پر خصوصی مضامین بھی۔۔۔۔میں تواب بہت کچھ بھول چکا ہوں۔ طارق عزیزکے رسالے ”بچوں کے رسالہ “ میں مےرے قسط وار ناولز شائع ہو چکے ہیں۔

بعدازاں ”ففٹی ففٹی“ کے دوسرے جنم پر خاکے لکھے ۔ٹی وی پر بچوں کے دو پروگرام لکھے ۔ قاسم جلالی کے عید شوز کا میں باقاعدہ رائٹر ہوا کرتا تھا۔ این ٹی ایم شروع ہواتووہاں بھی مزاحیہ پروگراموں میں خاکے لکھے ۔ میرا مزاج ایسا تھا کہ میں پروڈیوسرزکی چاپلوسی نہیں کر پاتا تھاورنہ شائد بہت آگے جاتا۔

مجھے اطہر شاہ خان جیدی نے کئی بار ٹی وی پروڈیوسرز سے ملوایا مگر میں اپنے آپ کو اس ماحول میں ایڈجسٹ نہیں کر پایا اور بھاگ گیا۔ مجھے صحافت میں سلطانہ مہر،رعنافاروقی ، محمود شام اور دانش دیروی مرحوم سے بہت کچھ سیکھنے کو ملا ۔بد قسمتی یہ رہی کہ اتنی سخت محنت کرنے کے باوجود ادارے وقت پر پیسے نہیں دیتے ۔چنانچہ میں درمیان میں دو، تین بار صحافت چھوڑ کر ہانگ کانگ، جاپان اور کوریا جاتا رہاہے اور کئی سالوں تک وہاں جاب کی۔ میرے ماسٹرز کرنے کے بعد والد صاحب سے تعلقات بحال ہو گئے اور میں گھر واپس لوٹ آیا۔

صحا فت نے مجھے زندگی کو سمجھنے میں بڑی مدد دی ۔ میں نے اس دور کے کراچی سے پشاور تک کے تمام بڑے ٹی وی آرٹسٹوں کے انٹرویو کئے ۔ ان کے ساتھ بہت وقت بتایا۔ اسی طرح نواز شریف ، غلام مصطفٰے جتوئی ، بے نظیر ، الطاف حسین سمیت تمام چھوٹے بڑے سیاست دانوں کے انٹرویوز کئے ۔ بیشتر کا حال ایک جیسا ہے ۔ہم جنہیں پوجتے ہیں وہ میرے نزدیک ایک اچھے بول کے بھی مستحق نہیں ۔ ہمارے سسٹم نے دونمبری اور تین نمبریوں کوآگے کر دیاہے اور جو بیچارہ اوّل نمبر پر تھا وہ ناکام رہ گیا۔ سفارش اور رشوت وہ دیمک ہے جو پاکستان کو چاٹ گئی ہے ۔ اب کرپشن پہلے نمبر پر ہے ۔

میرا ایک دور وہ تھا جب میں روزنامہ جنگ میں شامل ہو ا۔ مجھے یہ اعزازحاصل ہے کہ روزنامہ جنگ نے پاکستان کی گولڈن جوبلی کے موقع پر کئی ہفتوں تک جو خصوصی ایڈیشن شائع کئے تھے ۔ اس ریسرچ ٹیم کا میں انچارج تھا اور پاکستان کی معیشت ، سیاست، کھیل اور کئی موضوعات پر وہ تمام تحقیقی کام میں نے اپنے ساتھیوں کی مدد سے مرتب کر کے ان پر خود مضامین لکھے تھے۔جب روزنامہ ایکسپریس پہلی بار کراچی سے شائع ہو اتو میں اس کا پہلا ”میگزین ایڈیٹر“ تھا۔میری صحافتی زندگی سینکڑوں واقعات سے بھری پڑی ہے ۔اختصار کے ساتھ بس اتنا کافی ہے ۔

سوال: آپ کی صحافتی زندگی میں پیش آنے والے دلچسپ واقعات جو آپ شیئر کرنا پسند کریں؟

جواب : میں نے اپنی صحافتی زندگی میں صرف دو بار کورٹ رپورٹنگ کی بقیہ وقت نیو ز ڈیسک یا میگزین میں ہی گزاراالبتہ میں نے جو فیچرز لکھے اور انٹرویوز کئے اس سے بڑی شخصیات کی ایسی بہت سی باتیں سامنے آئیں جو خبر کی صورت میں اخبارات اور رسائل نے چھاپیں۔ ”اخبارِجہاں“ میرا ماہانہ میگزین آتے ہی میرے انٹرویوز ، ڈائریز ، فیچرز سے خبریں نکال کرچھا پتا تھا۔ میں پیٹ پوجا کےلئے ٹپال ، پاکستان کیبل جیسی بڑی کمپنیوں کے سالانہ اور سیلز پروگرام ترتیب دیا کرتا تھا۔ میں ایک ایسے ہی پروگرام کے سلسلے میں لاہور میں تھا۔ جس شام میرا پروگرام مقامی ہوٹل میں پیش کیا جا ناتھا میں صبح اُٹھ کر اپنے آرٹسٹوں سے فون پر بات چیت کر رہا تھا ۔ اسی دوران مجھے ایک فنکار نے اطلاع دی کہ سلطان راہی کو گولیاں مار کر قتل کر دیا گیا۔اسی بات چیت کے دوران ویٹر میرے کمرے میں ناشتہ رکھنے آیاتھا۔ اس نے وہ گفتگو سن لی اور نیچے جاکر اپنے سٹاف کو بتا دیا ۔ یہ خبر جنگل کی آگ کی طرح اس ہوٹل میں پھیل گئی اور میرا فون بار بار بجتا رہا۔ان دونوں صرف دوٹی وی چینل ہوا کرتے تھے اور خبر فوری بریک کرنے کا کوئی انتظام نہ ہوتا تھا۔ اس دن میں نے فلم انڈسٹری کو جس طرح روتے ، بلکتے دیکھا اور محسوس کیا وہ آج بھی میرے دل پر نقش ہے۔
میں نے غالباً1986ءمیں طارق عزیز کا ایک انٹرویو لیا تھا۔ وہ انٹرویو کئی سالوں تک مختلف اخبارات اور رسائل میں چھپتا رہا۔ اس کی وجہ سے طارق عزیز مجھ سے ناراض ہو گئے ۔ حالانکہ میں نے وہی باتیں لکھی تھیں جو انھوں نے کہی تھیں۔اسی طرح کینیڈ ا آنے سے قبل میں نے روزنامہ” ایکسپر یس “کے میگزین ایڈیٹر کی حیثیت سے اپنے صفحہ کے لئے مہدی حسن مرحوم کا انٹرویو کیا ۔ یہ انٹرویو اتنا متنازعہ ہوا کہ مہدی حسن اور ان کے صاحبزادے آصف مہدی نے کراچی پریس کلب میں میرے خلاف ایک پریس کانفرنس کر دی مگر کبھی میرے خلاف کوئی قانونی چارہ جوئی نہ کر سکا کیونکہ میں انٹرویو ریکارڈ کیا کرتا تھا۔

پاکستان میں پہلی بار کرائم کی دنیا میں ایک لڑکی نے اپنے آشنا کہ ساتھ مل کر والدین کو قتل کر دیا۔یہ غالباً1998-99ءکی بات ہے ان دنوں روزنامہ ایکسپریس نیا نیا نکلا تھا، اس لڑکی اور کرائم کے حالات پر میری سٹوری نے تہلکہ مچا دیا تھا۔ہر بار میرا فالو اپ نئی ہلچل مچا دیتا تھا۔عدالت میں پیشی کے دن سارے کرائم رپورٹر میرے شائع شدہ رپورٹس پر مبنی سوالات کی بوچھاڑکیا کرتے تھے۔میرے اس تحقیقی فیچرز نے ایکسپریس کو اس کے ابتدائی دنوں میں کراچی میں مقبول بنانے میں اہم کردار اداکیا۔روزنامہ ایکسپریس کے ہی ذریعے میں نے پہلی باراخبارات کی دنیا میں کمپیوٹراور نیٹ کی دنیا کے لئے ویکلی صفحہ ترتیب دینا شروع کیا تھا جس میں پہلی بار اہم ویب سائٹس کا تعارف اور لنک دیا جاتا تھااور چیٹنگ کی دنیا سے دوستی و محبت کی حقیقی کہانیاں نام ومقام بدل کر پیش کی جاتی تھیں۔ایکسپریس کے مالک سلطان لاکھانی اس صفحے کی بے حد تعریف کرتے تھے۔بعد میں اس کی دیکھا دیکھی روزنامہ اُمت نے فوری طور پر ایسا ہی صفحہ شروع کیا ۔مفتی منیب الرحمان کو میں نے سب سے پہلے ایکسپریس کے ذریعے عوامی سطح پر متعارف کروایااور وہ اس کے بعد شہرت کی سیڑھیاں چڑھتے چلے گئے ۔ پھر یہی کہو ں گابے شمارواقعات ہیں ، کس کس کا تذکرہ کروں ۔

سوال: آپ کے صحافتی اصول کیا رہے ؟صحافتی زندگی کا کوئی ایسا واقعہ جس کی وجہ سے آپ کو سنگین نتائج کی دھمکیوں کا سامنا کرنا پڑاہو ؟

جواب: میں نے کبھی کسی کی ذاتی زندگی پر اس وقت تک خبر نہیں بنائی جب تک کہ اس سے اجتماعی طور پر سوسائٹی متاثر نہ ہو رہی ہو۔میں نے تجزیئے کو تجزیئے کے طور پر پیش کیا اور خبر کی معروضیت کو اسی انداز میں ۔ میری نکالی گئی سرخیاں بے حد پسند کی جاتی تھیں ۔ اس میں سنسنی نہیں مگر تجسس اور تشنگی ہوتی تھی جو قاری کو مضمون یا خبر کی تفصیلات پڑھنے پر اکساتی تھی۔ٹی آر پی ضروری ہے کیونکہ میڈیا ہاﺅ سز بھی بزنس ہیں مگر بزنس اور بحیثیت میڈیا اپنی ذمہ داریوں کے درمیان توازن قائم رکھا جائے ، میں بحیثیت میڈیا ورکر مالکان کے حقوق کا بھی خیال رکھتاتھا، مثبت صحافت کی بھی کوشش کرتا تھا اور قاری کی ضرورتوں کا بھی خیال رکھتاتھا۔

کئی واقعات ہیں۔ کراچی کے نامور سوشل ورکر نے دوسری شادی چھپ کر کی اور ان کی شوبز بیوی نے صحافیوں کو بے وقوف بنانا شروع کیا ۔اس پر میں نے دوسری شادی کی خبر چھاپ دی۔ مجھے اس پر دونوں جانب سے دھمکیاں ملیں کیونکہ وہ خاتون ان دنوں ایم کیوایم کے ایک لیڈر کی چہیتی بھی تھیں ۔ اسی طرح جب کراچی میں الطاف حسین کا طو طی بولتا تھا اس وقت پہلی بار ایک فوٹوگرافر نے ان کی تھری پیس سوٹ میں ”ماڈلنگ“ کی ۔ میں نے صرف دو تصاویر چھاپ کر اس کے نیچے لکھا ” مسٹر مہاجر“ ۔ اس طنز پر ایک طوفان برپا ہو گیا۔میرے دفتر میں دھمکیوں بھری اتنی کالز آنے لگیں کہ میرے دو پُر اعتماد ساتھی بھی میرا ساتھ چھوڑگئے ۔ بعدازاں اسی لسانی تحریک کی وجہ سے ہمیں ننگے پاﺅں بہن بھائیوں اور والدہ کے ساتھ گھر چھوڑکر بھاگنا پڑا ۔پھر ایک وقت ایسا آیا کہ میری ہزاروں کتابیں اور صحافتی ریکارڈ تلف کر دیا گیا۔یہ میری زندگی کا ایک بڑا دکھ ہے ۔ میرے کیرئر کا سرمایہ میرے ہاتھ سے نکل گیا۔پیپلز پارٹی کا سچ لکھنے پر مجھے ایک نوکری سے ہاتھ دھونے پڑے ۔ پنچابی پختون اتحاد نے ایک بار راستہ روک کر پٹائی کی ۔ میں مصلحت پسند نہیں ہوں اور ساری زندگی اس کی سزا ئیں بھگتتاآیا ہوں۔ہم مرنے کے بعد تو مرحوم کی خوبیا ں روپیٹ کر بیان کرتے ہیں مگر زندگی میں سچ اور حق کا ساتھ نہیں دیتے ۔

سوال: پاکستانی سیاست کو آپ کس نظر سے دیکھتے ہیں؟ پاکستان کے سیاستدان کس حد تک ملک اور قوم کے ساتھ مخلص ہیں؟

جواب: ترقی یافتہ ممالک کی سیاست پولیٹکل سائنس کے زمرے میں آتی ہے جبکہ ہماری سیاست ”کرمنالوجی “ کا حصّہ ہے ۔ اگر جمہوریت چلنے دی جاتی تویہ سارے کرپٹ بوڑھے سیاست دان ووٹوں کی چھلنی سے چھن کر گھر بیٹھ چکے ہوتے اور آج ملک پر نوجوانوں کی حکومت ہوتی ۔ نوجوان کبھی کر پٹ نہیں ہوتا، اسے سسٹم رفتہ رفتہ کرپٹ بنا دیتا ہے ۔ ہمارا سسٹم ایسا ہے کہ ہم آدھی عمر لاتیں کھاتے ہیں اور بقیہ آدھی عمر نئے آنے والوں کو لاتیں مارتے ہیں ۔ ہماری ایلیٹ کلاس ہی ہماری حکمران ہے اور ان سب کے منہ کو حرام لگ چکا ہے ۔جو سسٹم کا حصّہ نہ بنے وہ آگے ہی نہیں آسکتا۔میں ایک بات آپ کو بتاتا ہوں ۔ ہماری وہ نوجوان نسل جو پاکستان سے باہر فرسٹ ورلڈ میں تعلیم و تربیت حاصل کررہی ہے اگر اسے ہماری سیاست اور بیوروکریسی کا حصّہ بنایا جائے تو پاکستان تیزی سے آگے بڑھ سکتا ہے ۔ باہر رہنے والے پاکستان کے لئے زیادہ مخلص ہیں مگر سوال یہ ہے کہ بلی کے گلے میں گھنٹی کو ن باندھے گا؟ فوجی جنرلز کو چاہئے کہ سرحدوں کی حفاظت کے ساتھ ساتھ اب حقیقی جمہوریت کو بھی پنپنے میں مدد دیں یہی قوم و ملک کے ساتھ اخلاص ہوگا۔

میں بہت زیادہ مذہبی نہیں ہوں مگر مجھے سیاست دانوں میں مولانا نورانی مرحوم کی فراست نے متاثر کیا تھا۔ جن دنوں انٹرنیٹ، سوشل میڈیااور ای میل کچھ بھی نہیں تھامولانا نورانی عالمی سیاست کے رموز سے ایسے واقف تھے کہ میں ان سے باتیں کر کے حیران رہ جاتا۔ وہ مجھے عالمی اخبارات اور رسائل کے فوٹوسٹیٹ صفحات دیا کرتے تھے ۔ اسی طرح جماعت اسلامی کو نکال کر پروفیسر غفور احمد مرحوم کی سادگی اور سیاسی بالغ نظری کامیں مداح تھا۔

بے نظیر نواز شریف سے بھی زیادہ ذہین اور مدبّرتھیں ۔ ذاتی طور پر وہ اس قدر مال ومتاع دیکھ چکی تھیں کہ انھیں پیسے کی حرص نہیں تھی مگر انھیں زرداری کی دیمک لگ گئی۔میں بھٹواور عمران خان کی مقبولیت اور ذہانت ایک جیسی سمجھتا ہوں ۔ دونوں یکساں جذباتی ہیں اور سیاست میں جذباتیت نہیں چلتی ۔ عمران کے اندر جو مدبّر اور ذہین سیاست دان موجود ہے وہ اسے عوام کے سامنے لا ہی نہ سکے ۔وہ سطحی سیاسی تناﺅ میں بہہ کر ”میں نہ مانوں“ کی سیاست کا کھلونا بن گئے ۔

سچ پوچھئے تو پاکستان کے موجودہ سسٹم میں اب گلی گلی سیاسی کارکن نہیں بلکہ سوشل ورکرز کی ضرورت ہے ۔نوجوان اس سسٹم کو توڑنے کے لئے سوشل ورک کا ہتھیار استعمال کریں اور سیاست دانوں کر بھول کر مقامی طور پر عوام کی خدمت اپنی مدد آپ کے تحت کرنے کا بیڑا اُٹھالیں ۔عوام سوشل ورکرز کی مدد کریں اور سیاسی جلسوں کا بائیکاٹ کریں ۔

سوال: اب مختصراً یہ بتا ئیں کہ دہشت گردی کے ‘جن ‘پر پاکستان میں کیسے قابو پایا جاسکتا ہے ؟

جواب: یہ ہماری نادانیوں اور امداد بٹورنے کا سلسلہ تھا جس کی وجہ سے ہم عالمی استعماری قوتوں کی جنگیں اپنے ملک میں لڑتے رہے ۔میں 25 سال پہلے پڑھا کرتا تھا کہ عالمی طاقتیں اپنی جنگیں اپنے ملک سے باہر لڑیں گی پھر ہم نے ان خبروں کو عملی شکل اختیا ر ہوتے بھی دیکھ لیا۔آج کی صورتحال کچھ بہتری کے جانب جا رہی ہے ۔ آج کل فوج کے خلاف پاکستان مخالفین سوشل میڈیا پر جس طرح سے زور شور سے چیخ و پکار مچا رہے ہیں اس سے ثابت ہو رہا ہے کہ جنرل راحیل شریف پاکستان کے لئے اخلاص کے ساتھ کام کررہے ہیں ۔وہ چین کو پرسکون ماحول فراہم کرنے کے لئے ہر طرح کی شر پسندی کا خاتمہ کر رہے ہیں ۔ یہ اتنا آسان کام نہیں کیونکہ امریکہ اور بھارت کی پوری کوشش ہے کہ ”سی پیک“ کا 51  ارب ڈالر کا منصوبہ مکمل نہ ہو کیونکہ اس سے پاکستان اور ایشیا خوش حال ہوگا۔ یہ میں فوج کی نہیں ، اپنے سچ کی زبان بول رہا ہوں ۔ فوج میں کچھ طبقہ بہت کرپٹ ہو گیا تھا مگر اب بہتری نظر آرہی ہے ۔ نوازشریف کو چاہئے کہ وہ راحیل شریف کی معیاد میں اضافہ کریں تا کہ مارشل لاء کا خطرہ بھی جاتا رہے اور پاکستان میں دہشت گردی اور بد سکونی کا خاتمہ ہو۔

سوال: یہ توتھی آپ سے بحیثیت صحافی گفتگو۔ اب آتے ہیں آپ کی مزاح نگاری کی جانب ۔ حال ہی میں آپ کی دوسری طنزیہ مزاحیہ کتاب ”پارچے“ شائع ہوئی ہے جسے سوشل میڈیا اور مزاح کے قارئین میں بڑی پزیرائی حاصل ہورہی ہے ۔ آپ اپنی پہلی کتاب ”دیسی لائف ان کینڈا “اور ”پارچے“ میں کیا فرق محسوس کرتے ہیں ؟

جواب: میری پہلی کتاب ” دیسی لائف ان کینڈا“ 2008 ءمیں کراچی سے شائع ہوئی تھی اور ”پارچے“ 2016ءمیں ٹورنٹوسے شائع ہوئی ہے ۔ پہلی کتاب”مہجوری ادب“ کے دائرے میں آتی ہے۔اس میں ہجرت کے مسائل پر بات ہوئی ہے مگر طنز و مزاح کے انداز میں ۔کلچرل شا ک، روزگار کے مسائل ، رشتوں کی اونچ نیچ، دوستیاں ، محبتیں، نفرتیں جو ہجر کے ساتھ آپ کی گود میں آگرتی ہیں اس پر جب بھی لکھا گیا سنجیدگی کے ساتھ لکھا گیا۔

میں نے اپنے آنسواپنے اندر جذب کئے اور ان ساری تکالیف کو ہنس کر برداشت کیا اور اس طرح لکھا کہ پڑھنے والا بھی کہیں مسکرائے اور کہیں ہنسے مگر جب وہ ہنس چکے تو اسے احساس ہو کہ بین السطور یہ عوامل کس طرح کی توجہ چاہتے ہیں۔ میری اس کتاب کی پریس کلب کراچی میں شاندار تقریب رونمائی ہوئی تھی جس میں حسینہ معین ، پروفیسر سحر انصاری، کراچی پریس کلب کے سابق صدر امتیاز خان فاران اور موجودہ صدر اور ممتاز شاعر فاضل جمیلی نے جس طرح اظہارِ خیال کیا تھا اور میرے پڑھنے والوں اور صحافی دوستوں نے جس اپنائیت سے شرکت کی تھی وہ میرے لئے قابل فخر ہے ۔ ” دیسی لائف ان کینیڈ ا “نے بحیثیت مزاح نگار مجھے روشناس کروایا۔

” پارچے“ میری مزاح نگاری کا دوسرا پڑاﺅ ہے۔ بقول ممتاز ادیب ، شاعر اور دانشور ڈاکٹر خالد سہیل ” یہ کتاب آپ کا مزاح نگاری میں ایک مقام متعین کرے گی“۔ یہ کتاب اس لحاظ سے اہم ہے کہ اس میں میں نے ان موضوعات پر مزاح لکھا ہے جس پر آج تک اردو ادب میں نہیں لکھاگیا۔ آج کے دور کے تقاضوں کے تحت میں نے مضامین مختصر رکھے ہیں ۔ اسی طرح ” علیل جبران“ کے قلمی نام سے میرے One Liner فیس بک پر بہت مقبول ہوئے۔ مجھے فیس بک پر اورعام زندگی کے قریبی دوست اب علیل جبران کے نام سے ہی پکارتے ہیں ۔ اس کتاب کا ایک باب ان One Liners پر مشتمل ہے ۔اس میں میرے اپنے انداز کے لکھے گئے ”شخصی خاکے “ بھی ہیں جسے پڑھ کر آپ سب یقینا محظوظ ہونگے۔ یہ کتاب ” ایمزون“پر بھی دستیاب ہے۔پاکستان میں مختصر تعداد میں بھیجی گئی تھی مگر ہاتھوں ہاتھ لے لی گئیں ۔ جلد پاکستان کے لئے OLXپر بھی دستیاب ہوگی۔

سوال: طنز یہ مزاحیہ تحریروں کے ذریعے کیا معاشرے میں تبدیلی لائی جاسکتی ہے؟

جواب: میرے نزدیک مزاح ایسی خوشگواریت کا نام ہے جواوپر سے آپ کو ہنساتی ہے اور اندرسے سوچنے پر مجبور کردیتی ہے۔میرے پڑھنے والے مجھ سے جس طرح محبت کا اظہار کرتے ہیں اسے دیکھ کر مجھے اندازہ ہوتا ہے کہ میرا پیغام ان کے دلوں میں اتر تا ہے۔ یہی میرے قلم کی کامیابی ہے۔

سوال: اچھے ادیب میں کیا خوبیاں ہونی چاہئیں؟

جواب: اچھا ادیب اچھا انسان بھی ہو۔ اگر وہ معاشرے کو سدھارنے کے لئے لکھتا ہے تو پھر اسے سب سے پہلے اپنے آپ کو سدھارنا چاہئے تاکہ اس کے لکھے میں سچائی کی طاقت شامل ہو جائے۔

سوال : نو جوانوں میں ادب سے لگاﺅ کم کیوں ہو رہا ہے ؟

جواب : یہ ٹرینڈ صر ف پاکستان میں ہے کیونکہ ہم نے نوجوانوں کو مطالعے کی عادت نہیں ڈالی ۔آپ کینیڈاآکر دیکھ لیں ۔ لائبریریاں نوجوانوں سے بھری رہتی ہیں ۔ ہم جدید تقاضوں کے تحت لکھ رہے ہیں نہ نئے آنے والوں کو خوش آمدید کہتے ہیں ۔پاکستان میں فنون ِ لطیفہ کیوں زوال پذیر ہے؟ اسے سوچئے اور اس پر باربار لکھیئے ۔

سوال: آپ نے کینیڈا کب اور کیوں ہجرت کی ؟

جواب : میں پاکستان میں اپنے بچوں اور اپنی لائف سے مطمئن نہیں تھا ۔ آزاد ملک میں رہتے ہوئے بھی مجھے ایسا لگتاتھا کہ میں ذہنی طورپر غلام ہوں۔ جو کہنا اور کرنا چاہتا ہوں اس میں بے جا روک ٹوک ہے۔ اگرچہ صحافت میں آگے بڑھ رہا تھا مگر کراچی کے حالات مجھے بے بس کرتے جارہے تھے۔پھر میں نے امیگریشن لی اور اب پندرہ سال بعد سمجھتا ہوں کہ یہ میرا بالکل درست فیصلہ تھا۔ اگرچہ میں نے اپنے کیرئر کو سائیکل کا کیرئر بنا لیا مگر میرے بچوں کے لئے ساری دنیا کے دروازے کھل گئے ۔ وہ اب کینیڈا کی ان یونیورسیٹیوں میں تعلیم حاصل کر رہے ہیں جس کا ہم جیسے لوئر مڈل کلاس خواب بھی نہیں دیکھ سکتے تھے۔میری ایک بیٹی یونیورسٹی میں جرنلزم میں زیر تعلیم بھی ہے اور یہاں کے سب سے پرانے اور بڑے اخبار” ٹورنٹو سٹار“ کی سٹاف رپورٹربھی ہے۔ الحمدلِلّٰلہ میں نے اپنے بچوں کو آگے بڑھنے کا راستہ فراہم کر دیا ہے۔

سوال: بہت سے پاکستانی کینیڈا، امریکہ، برطانیہ، آسٹریلیاجیسےممالک جاناچاہتے ہیں، آپ کا ان کے لئے کیا مشورہ ہے ؟

جواب : قانونی طریقے سے آئیں ۔ صرف کمانے نہ آئیں ، ہجرت کر جائیں تاکہ ان ممالک کے تمام بینیفٹس آپ کو مل سکیں۔ خاص طور پرنوجوانوں کو کہونگا کہ اب کینیڈا ہجرت کرنے کے لئے بہت چھوٹی سی رقم درکار ہوتی ہے۔اگر آپ ماسٹرز ہیں اور اپنی فیلڈ کا پانچ سالہ تجربہ رکھتے ہیں تو کینیڈا کے لئے ضرور اپلائی کریں ۔ یہاں آجائیں تو یہاں کے مطابق اپنی تعلیم مکمل کریں ۔ کینیڈامیں تعلیم سے دلچسپی رکھنے والوں کے لئے آگے بڑھنے کے بڑے مواقع ہیں ۔میں ذہین اور باصلاحیت نوجوانوں کی امیگریشن میں ان کی اخلاقی مدد کر سکتاہوں مگر یاد رکھیں سست اور کاہلوں کا یہاں کوئی مستقبل نہیں ۔

سوال: آخر میں پاکستانی نوجوانوں کے نام کیا پیغام دینا چاہیں گے؟

مصنوعات کی لاگت میں کمی اور کم وقت میں بہتر نتائج حاصل کرنے کے لئے دنیا بھر میں جدید ٹیکنالوجی اور خودکارربوٹس پرتیزی سے کام ہو رہا ہے جو صنعتوں اور اداروں میں افرادی قوت کی جگہ لے سکیں۔ ایسا محسو س ہوتا ہے کہ جیسے جیسے صنعتوں میں اشیاءسازی اور فیصلہ سازی کے میدان میں خود کار مشینوں، ربوٹس اور کمپیوٹر کا استعمال بڑھتا جائے گا تو یہ ممکن ہے کہ بہت سے لوگوں کو اپنے روزگار سے محروم ہونا پڑے۔پاکستان میں بھی کاروباری اور صنعتی اداروں میں یہ سوچ پیدا ہو رہی ہے کہ کس طرح کم افرادی قوت، کم اخراجات اور کم وقت میں زیادہ بہتر نتائج اورپیداوار حاصل کی جا سکتی ہے ۔بہت سے اداروں میں مصنوعی ذہانت اور جدید ٹیکنالوجی کے استعمال کا آغاز ہو چکا ہے اب سوال یہ پیدا ہوتا ہے کہ کیا یہ ٹیکنالوجی آخرکار وائٹ کالر ، بلیو کالر جابز ، صنعتی کارکنوں ، دستکاروں ،نچلے درجے کے ملازمین کی جگہ لے لے گی اور یہ ملازم پیشہ افراداپنے روزگارسے محروم ہو جائیں گے اور موجودہ دور کی بہت سی پرکشش ملازمتوں کا وجود خطرے میں پڑ جائے گا ۔خودکارربوٹس ، سمارٹ مشینوں اور سافٹ وئیر کے استعمال سے ملازمتوں کی گنجائش کم ہورہی ہے۔
امریکہ بے روزگاری کے بحران سے پیدا ہونے والے مسائل کا سامنا کر چکا ہے، 2007 سے 2009 کے دوران امریکی کاروباری اورصنعتی اداروں میں جدید ٹیکنالوجی کے استعمال کی وجہ سے بہت سے ملازم پیشہ افراد کو اپنی ملازمت سے محروم ہونا پڑا جس سے روزگارکاشدید بحران پیدا ہوا ، وائٹ کالر اور بلیوکالر جابز کا مستقبل خطرے میں پڑ گیاکیونکہ بہت سے اداروں میں ربوٹس اور سافٹ وئیر کا استعمال عام ہو گیا۔اس پریشان کن صورتحال کی وجہ مڈل کلاس ملازمت کا حصول مشکل ہو گیااور جو افراد بر سر روزگار تھے انہیں بے روزگاری کے خوف نے نفسیاتی مریض بنا دیا۔
سافٹ بینک کے بانی ماسایوشی سن، نے 30 سال پہلے پیش گوئی کی تھی کہ سب کے پاس پرسنل کمپیوٹر یا پھر پی سی جیسی ڈیوائس ہوںگی۔ان کا کہنا ہے کہ میں د یکھ رہا ہوں کہ آنے والے سالوں میں مصنوعی دماغ انسانی دماغ سے بہتر ہوجائے گا۔ شماریات کے لئے دس لاکھ گنا تیز ہوگا، دس لاکھ گنا سٹوریج کی سہولت ہوگی اور مصنوعی دماغ کے ذریعے مکالمہ دس لاکھ گناتیز ہو گا۔ جب ایساہوگا تو بزنس ماڈل ،لائف سٹائل اور تکنیک بالکل مختلف ہوگی۔ وہ کہتے ہیں کہ تجارت کو کمپیوٹنگ کی طاقت کا استعمال کرناچاہئے۔ انہیں خیالات سے ملتی جلتی پیشن گوئیاں آج سے دس سال پہلے بل گیٹس نے بھی کی تھی ، انہوں نے ایک عالمی یادداشت جاری کی تھی، جس کا عنوان تھا ”کام کرنے کی نئی دنیا“۔ اس میں بل گیٹس نے آئندہ دس سالوں میں افراد اور اداروں کے کام کرنے کے انداز میں ہونے والی نمایاں تبدیلیوں کا تصور پیش کیا تھا۔ ان کی تمام پیشن گوئیاں تو درست ثابت نہیں ہوئی لیکن ان کی کہی ہوئی بہت سی باتیں سچ ثابت ہو چکی ہیں۔ جیساکہ انہوں نے کہا تھا کہ سافٹ ویئر ہمارے مددگارہو ں گے اوریہ سافٹ ویئر ہمارے کام کرنے کے انداز سے سیکھیں گے، اور ہماری ضروریات کو سمجھیں گے اور ترجیحات متعین کرنے میں مدد دیں گے۔ ان کہی ہوئی یہ اور دیگر بہت سی باتیں سچ ثابت ہوگئی ہیں۔
اب ڈیجیٹلائزیشن کو روکنا ممکن نہیں۔آئندہ سال جاپان میں 4400مربع میٹر کے رقبہ پر مشتمل پہلا اِن ڈور ”روبو فارم “ تیا ر ہوجائے گا ، اس روبو فارم میں روزانہ سلاد کے تیس ہزار پودوں کی پیدا وار کی گنجائش ہوگی ۔ اس زرعی فارم کے تمام انتظامات اور کنٹرول ربوٹس کے ہاتھ میں ہوگا جس سے پیدا واری لاگت کم ہو جائے گی ۔ ما ہرین کا اندازہ ہے کہ ربوٹس کے استعمال کی وجہ سے اخراجات کی نصف بچت ہوگی ۔ اسی طرح جرمنی میں مصنوعی ذہانت کے ایک ریسرچ سنٹر میں کم وقت میں خریداری کے منصوبے پر تحقیق جاری ہے۔ اس تحقیق کی روشنی میں انہوں نے تجرباتی طور پر ایک سپر سٹور پرخریداری کاجو نیا طریقہ متعارف کرایا ہے اس میں تمام نظام ڈیجیٹل ہوگا، خریداری کے بعد کیش کاو¿نٹر پر تمام اشیاءخود کار طریقے سے سکین ہوں گی اور آپ رقم کی ادائیگی گاڑی کے ساتھ منسلک کریڈٹ کارڈ کے ذریعے کر سکیں گے ۔ خریداری کا یہ جدید نظام بہت جلد دنیا بھر میں مقبولیت حاصل کر لے گا اور سپر سٹورز کا انظا م ربوٹس اور سافٹ وئیر کی مدد سے چلایا جائے گا۔
ملک بھر میں سی این جی سٹیشنوں کی بھرمار ہے لیکن کیا انہوں نے کبھی یہ سوچا ہوگا کہ ایک دن ایسا بھی آئے گا کہ جب لوگ گھروں میں ہی گاڑی میں گیس فلنگ کر لیا کریں گے۔بہت جلد یہ وقت آنے والا ہے جب گاڑیوں میں گیس بھر وا نے کےلئے نہ تو فلنگ سٹیشنز کی ضرورت ہو گی اور نہ ہی قطاروں میں لگ کر گھنٹوں انتظار کرنا پڑے گا ۔امریکہ میں سی این جی کے متبادل اے این جی (Absorbed Natural Gas) سسٹم پر تحقیق آخری مراحل میں ہے ۔ اے این جی ابھی کمرشل بنیادوں پر دستیاب نہیں ہے لیکن بہت جلدلوگ اے این جی ANG سسٹم کے تحت اپنی گاڑیوں کو گھروں میں عام استعمال ہونے والی گیس ایک کم قیمت کمپریسر کی مدد سے خود بھی بھر سکیں گے۔ اسی طرح شکاگو میں قائم ادارے امپوسبل ابجیکٹس(Impossible Objects) کے چئیرمین رابرٹ سوارٹز اس کوشش میں لگے ہوئے ہیں کہ تھری ڈی پرنٹرز کی مدد سے جیٹ طیاروں،سپورٹس کاروں، ڈرون طیاروں، راڈارزاور مختلف مشینوں میں استعمال ہونے والے مہنگے پرزے اب کاربن کے ریشوں سے تیارکئے جائیں۔ کاربن کے ریشوں کی مدد سے تیار ہونے والے پرزے وزن میں ہلکے اور ایلومینیم سے زیادہ مضبوط ہوتے ہیں اور ہر کوئی انہیں خرید سکتا ہے۔یہ طریقہ کاربہت آسان اور کم خرچ ہوگا ،اب مطلوبہ پرزے کا ڈیزائن کمپیوٹر کی مدد سے تیار کیا جائے گااور اس کے بعد محض ایک بٹن کو دبانا پڑتا ہے اور مطلوبہ پرزہ چند گھنٹوں کے اندر تیار ہو جاتا ہے اور یہ تمام عمل تھری ڈی پرنٹر کی مدد سے مکمل کیا جاتا ہے۔ موجودہ دور میں بھی زندگی کے ہر شعبہ میں جدید ٹیکنالوجی کا عمل دخل بڑھ چکا ہے مثال کے طور پر طبعی ٹیکنالوجی کی صنعت میں تیز رفتار ترقی نے اب ربوٹ کے ذریعے سرجری کو آسان بنا دیا ہے۔ امریکہ میں ربوٹ کے ذریعے سرجری اب معمول کی بات ہے۔ اس طر ح کی بے شمار مثالیں موجود ہیں۔
اب آپ جدید ٹیکنالوجی کا کمال دیکھیں کہ اُبر (Uber) ٹیکسی کی سروس دنیا بھر کے 382 اہم شہروں میں دستیاب ہے ۔ چین میں اُبر کی گاڑیوں پر روزانہ دس لاکھ کے قریب لوگ سفر کرتے ہیں۔ اُبر کمپنی چین کے مزید 100 شہروں میں کاروبار پھیلانے کیلئے ایک ارب دس کروڑ ڈالر خرچ کرنے کا منصوبہ بنا رہی ہی۔ حال ہی میں اُبر (Uber) کی سروس کے آغاز نے چین کے شہر تیانجن (Tianjin) میںٹیکسی ڈرائیورز میں بے چینی پیدا کردی ہے۔ اب وہاں کے مقامی ٹیکسی ڈرائیور اپنی آمدنی بچانے کیلئے جدوجہد رہے ہیں۔جب میں یہ آرٹیکل لکھ رہا تھا تو میرے ذہن میں یہ آیا کہ ایک دن ایسا بھی آئے گا کہ اُ بر ٹیکسی کی سروس پاکستان کے بڑے شہروں میں بھی شروع ہو جائے گی تو پھر رکشہ، رینٹ اے کار اور ٹیکسی ڈرائیوروں کا روزگار متاثر ہو گا ، ابھی میر ا آرٹیکل مکمل نہیں ہوا تھا کہ چند  دن  پہلے اُبر نے لاہور سے اپنی سروس کا آغاز کر دیا ہے۔جس تیز رفتاری سے کام کرنے کے انداز تبدیل ہورہے ہیں اس سے آنے والے 20 یا 25 سالوں میں کون کون سے شعبے متاثر ہوسکتے ہیں اب تھوڑا سا ذکر ان پیشوں اور شعبوں کا بھی ہو جائے جن کا مستقبل تاریک ہو سکتا ہے ،مثلاًپاکستان میں ٹیوشن سنٹرز کا کاروبار بہت منافع بخش ہے جب کہ 2025 تک فری لانس پروفیسرز کی کافی ڈیمانڈ ہوگی ، آن لائن تعلیم حاصل کرنے کا رجحان عروج پر ہوگا، اُس وقت اپنی یونی ورسٹی بنانے کے لئے صرف بہترین آن لائن ٹیچنگ کا انداز ، نصابی کتب اور مارکیٹنگ کو کا میابی کی ضمانت سمجھا جائے گا۔حال ہی میں ہائیر ایجوکیشن کمیشن (HEC) نے طالباءکے تھیسز(Thesis) چیک کرنے کے لئے ایک سافٹ وئیر تیار کروایا ہے، اس میں بہت سی خوبیاں ہیں ، یہ اردواور انگریزی کے تھیسز چیک کر سکے گا اور اگر کسی نے تحریرکہیں سے چرائی ہوگی تو اس کا علم بھی ہو جائے گا ۔یہ ایک سافٹ وئیر آنے والے وقت میں پیپر چیک کرنے والے اساتذہ کا روزگار ختم کر دے گا ۔اب تو لاہور پولیس نے بھی تفتیش کے لیے ایپلی کیشنز استعمال کرنے کا آغاز کر دیا ہے۔
انٹر نیٹ پر کاروبار کی ایک نئی دنیا تخلیق ہوچکی ہے ، اپنے کام میں مہارت رکھنے والے فری لانسرزگھر بیٹھ کر کام کر رہے ہیں ۔اسی طرح شاپنگ سنٹرز اور سپر سٹورز سے خریداری کے رجحان میں نمایا ںکمی ہوئی ہے اور لوگ آن لائن شاپنگ کو ترجیح دے رہے ہیں ، مستقبل میں اس کا نتیجہ یہ نکلے گا کہ دکانوں پر خریداری کم ہونے کی وجہ سے ان کے کرایوں میں نمایا ںکمی ہوگی اور شاپنگ سنٹر بنانے کا رجحان بہت کم ہو جائے گا۔ ہمارے ہمسایہ ملک کی ایک صنعتی تنظیم ایسو چیم(ASSOCHAM) نے اپنی حالیہ رپورٹ میں اسی خطرے کی نشان دہی کی ہے۔ انہوں نے دس بڑے شہروں کے اعداد و شمار کی بنیاد پر جو رپورٹ تیار کی ہے اس کے مطابق شاپنگ سنٹرز کے کاروبار میں 25 سے 30 فیصد کمی واقع ہوئی ہے ۔ اس رپورٹ کے مطابق ، بڑھتی ہوئی مصروفیت اور جدید طرز ِزندگی کی وجہ سے لوگ شاپنگ سنٹرز جا کر خریداری کرنے کے بجائے آن لائن خریداری کی جانب تیزی سے متوجہ ہو رہے ہیں۔
انٹرنیٹ کی وجہ سے جہاں بہت سے لوگو ں کو روز گار بھی ملا ہے وہاں انٹرنیٹ کی وجہ سے بہت سے کام متاثر بھی ہوئے ہیں جیسا کہ ڈیجیٹل میڈیا نے پرنٹ میڈیا کی سرکولیشن کم کردی ہے ، کتابوں کی خریداری کے رجحان میں کمی آئی ہے اور انٹرنیٹ نے روایتی پبلسٹی کا انداز تبدیل کر دیا ہے جس سے پرنٹنگ پریس انڈسٹری کا کاروبار بھی متاثر ہوا ہے ۔اب فیس بک نے براہِ راست ویڈیو سٹریمنگ کی سہولت مہیا کر دی ہے ، مجھے تو ایسے لگتا ہے کہ آنے والے وقت میں اس سہولت کی وجہ سے الیکٹرانک میڈیا کی مقبولیت میں کمی آئے گی ۔
سی بی آر ای(CBRE) کی ایک رپورٹ کے مطابق 2025 تک موجودہ دور کی آدھی ملازمتیں ختم ہو جائیں گی۔2030 تک رئیل اسٹیٹ کے بزنس کا انداز بالکل بدل جائے گا، خریدو فروخت اور ٹرانزکشن آن لائن ہو ں گی۔آج کی نوجوان نسل کو ایسے پریشان کن چیلنج کا سامنا ہے کہ انہیں ایک ایسے کیر ئیر کے لئے تیار ہونا پڑ رہا ہے جن کی ملازمتوں کا ابھی وجود ہی نہیں ہے۔اسی بات کی مزید وضاحت ڈاکٹر کیتھی این ڈیوڈسن نے اس انداز سے کی ہے وہ کہتی ہیں کہ سکولوں میں پڑھنے والے 65 فیصد طالب علم اپنی عملی زندگی میں ایسی جابز کریں گے جس کا ابھی وجود ہی نہیں ہے۔
کیا جدید ٹیکنالوجی سب کچھ ختم کر دے گی ؟ایسا تو نہیں ہے ۔ ٹیکنالوجی کے ملازمتوں پراثرات کی ایک تجزیاتی رپورٹ بتاتی ہے کہ بہت سے ملکوں میں ٹیکنالوجی کی وجہ سے جابز میں اضافہ کی بجائے کمی ضرور ہوئی ہے لیکن اس کے باوجود جی ڈی پی(GDP) ہمیشہ کم ہونے کی بجائے زیادہ ہوا ہے۔آنے والے دس ، 20 سال ٹیکنالوجی کی ترقی کے ہیں ، اس دوران بہت سی چیزیں بنیںگی ، نئی نئی ایجادات ہوں گی اور بہت سی چیزوں کا وجود ختم ہو جائے گا اور تقریباً 20 سال بعد ہم ایک مستحکم مقام پر پہنچ جائیں گے۔یہ ایسے ہی ہو گا جیسے 50سال کی عمر کے لوگوں نے اپنی زندگی میں بہت سی ایجادات کو وجود میں آتے ، عروج پر پہنچتے اور پھر ختم ہوتے دیکھا ہے ۔ مثلاً وی سی آرآیا ، عروج پر پہنچا اور ختم بھی ہوگیا۔
وہ بہت سے نوجوان جن کی خواہش ہوتی ہے کہ وہ فوج جوائن کر کے اپنے ملک کی خدمت کریں گے لیکن آنے والے وقت میں ربوٹس ان کی جگہ لے لیں گے، جن میں سب سے پہلے امریکہ اس کے بعد چائناپھر روس اور اسرائیل اور اس کے بعد باقی دنیا اس ٹیکنالوجی سے فائدہ اُٹھائے گی ۔ جدید ٹیکنالوجی کی بدولت آنے والے وقت میں کسی بھی جگہ سے کہیں بھی حملہ کرنے کی صلاحیت ہوگی ۔اس ترقی کی وجہ سے جہاں بہت سی جابز ختم ہوں گی ، وہاں نئی ملازمتوں کے مواقعے بھی پیدا ہوں گے ، مثلاً فوجی ربورٹس کی دیکھ بھال سے متعلق ملازمت ، ڈرون آپریٹر ، ربوٹ ڈیزائنر اور سائبر وار فیئر ایکسپرٹ وغیرہ ۔ہمیں اس بات کو مدنظر رکھ کر کسی شعبہ کا انتخاب کرنا ہوگا۔آنے والے وقت میں تخلیقی ذہانت،سوشل اور ایموشنل انٹیلی جنس کے شعبوں میں ملازمت کے مواقعے زیادہ ہوں گے۔
پاکستان میں مڈل کلاس ملازمت کا حصول کتنا مشکل ہے یہ ہم سب جانتے ہیں یہی وجہ ہے کہ پوری قوم بھیڑ چال کے فارمولے پر عمل کر ر ہی ہے ، ہماری اس عادت اور سوچ نے ہمیں بہت نقصان پہنچایا ہے ، ہم بہت سے فیصلے اس بنیا د پر کرتے ہیں کہ فلاں نے اس کام سے بہت پیسے کمائے ہیں یا اس فیلڈ میں بہت کامیاب ہوا ہے ،ہم بھی یہی کریں گے ، یہی وجہ ہے کہ زیادہ تر نوجوانوں کی خواہش ہے کہ وہ کمپیوٹرکی فیلڈ میں مہارت حاصل کریں کیونکہ دیگر ملازمتوں کی نسبت کمپیوٹرٹیکنالوجی کے میدان میں پرکشش تنخواہ کا حصول اور ترقی کے امکانات زیادہ ہوتے ہیں۔ لیکن ہماری بد نصیبی یہ ہے کہ ہمارے تعلیمی اداروں میں کمپیوٹر اور جدید ٹیکنالوجی کے نام پر جو نصاب پڑھایا جا رہا ہے وہ اس قابل نہیں ہے کہ تعلیم مکمل کرنے کے بعد کوئی طالب علم اپنی قابلیت اور مہارت کا مظا ہرہ کر سکے اس لئے عملی زندگی میں انہیں بہت سی مشکلات کا سامنا کرنا پڑ تا ہے ۔
جدید ترقی نے کام کرنے کے تمام انداز بدل دئیے ہیں جس سے مجموعی طور پر مڈل کلاس کے ملازمین، ہنر مند افراد اور مزدور طبقے کو پریشانی کا سامنا کرنا پڑرہا ہے ۔ اگر ہم دورِجدید کے تقاضوں کے مطابق اپنے آپ کو اپ ڈیٹ نہیں کریںگے تو ہو سکتا ہے کہ ہمیں بھی اپنی ملاز مت سے محروم ہونا پڑے ۔کاش ایسا ہو کہ ہماری حکومت بھی مستقبل کی ضرورتوں اور جدید دور کے تقاضوں کے مطابق پالیسیاں بنائے، تعلیمی نصاب کو مستقبل کی ضرورتوں کو مدِنظر رکھ کر مرتب کیا جائے اور کم از کم ہر ایک سال بعد نصاب کو لازمی اپ ڈیٹ کیا جائے ، تعلیمی ادارے آنے والے وقت کو ذہن میں رکھ کر اور ملک میں دستیاب ملازمتوں کے اعدادوشمارکو مدِنظر رکھ کر ایسے کورسز ،ڈگریز اور ہنر متعارف کروائیں کہ تعلیم مکمل کرنے کے بعد کسی کو ملازمت تلاش کرنے میں دشواری نہ ہواور اس فرد کو کم از کم اپنی زندگی میں ٹیکنالوجی کی ترقی کی وجہ سے روز گار سے محروم نہ ہونا پڑے۔

Mushroom is high in protein, richest in folic acid, fat free cholesterol free, sodium free, good source of potassium but in Pakistan it cannot become the part of our food as compare the other part of the world. In Pakistan more than 90% people are not aware about the mushroom as food and its taste. If any mushroom lover wants to grow it they have no idea for spawn and its technical know how, if anybody gets spawn and grow it successfully then they have no idea where to sell it. Mushroom festival provides an excellent opportunity to participants raise awareness about practical growing technology of mushroom domestic and commercial level.

“Mushrooms Cultivation & Cooking Workshop” was organized on the second day at Pakistan Museum of Natural History. Mr. Akhlaq Khan (Mushroom culture expert), Mr. Tariq Tanveer (CEO, ATDC), Dr. Shehzad Basra (UAF) and Dr. Shiekh Iqbal (Haripur University) shared their experience and views regarding mushroom culture. Mr. Tariq Tanveer stressed on the adaptation of the Agri. Tourism and mushroom culture as a new industry in the country while the Dr. Shehzad suggested introducing innovations in the efficient mushroom culture. Mushroom pickle was introduced first time in Pakistan by Mr. Zain ul Abideen. A mushroom cooking competition was also held among the participants. Prizes were distributed among the winners.

The closing session was presided over by Dr. Akram Shiekh (Acting Chairman, Pakistan Science Foundation) along with Dr. M. K. Leghari (D.G, PMNH), Mr. Tariq Tanveer (CEO, ATDC) and Dr. Shiekh Iqbal. Dr. Akram Shiekh appreciated the organizing team for their efforts to make the event simply successful and expressed his desire to keep the National Mushroom Festival as the iconic event of the PMNH and to organize it as an annual activity. It is a best way to promote the mushroom industry and spread the message of its importance, said the Chairman, PSF. Dr. Ismail the chief organizer of the event highly appreciated both by the participants and the competent authorities for his keen interest and hard work to provide such an awesome family entertaining and educational opportunity. At the end of the event the chairman PSF and the D.G. PMNH presented the souvenir to the guest speakers and the heads of the co-organizer parties.

Tell me about your career in the social sciences?

I was the head of a small department in development studies for some years when I was in my earlier thirties. Then I began working abroad, first in East Africa in UNESCO, handling projects in adult education and mass media. That time, UNESCO supported about 50 small, rural newspapers in many African countries. They were meant for newly literate people. Often there was little reading material in local languages and those who had just learnt to read could easily fall back into illiteracy if they didn’t read. Radio was also popular in rural areas and Easy Pesa money transfer was first started in Kenya in East Africa. Now that is popular everywhere, and other mobile banking has also developed.

I have my company HETLAND INTERNATIONAL and we provide various forms of consultancy and advisory services in education and development in developing countries, including in refugee and returnee fields and post-conflict support.

How do you see diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Norway? What are the areas for improvement?

The diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Norway always have been good. Norway has helped Pakistan in different fields. Many Pakistanis go to Norway and Sweden for study. Sweden has started charging for education, but it is still free in Norway and students go Norway to study there. Yet, the living costs are very high in Norway.

Let me also mention that there is one major Norwegian company in Pakistan, namely Telenor. Some other companies are here, but there is room for more private sector activities, such as in the energy sector. Norway is a leading land in hydropower energy production and distribution through small-scale companies, often owned by the municipalities or counties.

How are Pakistani immigrants faring in Norway?

Many Pakistanis do well in Norway. The deputy chair of the Labour Party, the largest party in Norway, is Hadia Tajik (33). Her parents migrated from Quetta to Norway, and Hadia grew up in a small town outside Stavanger on the west coast. In December, the title of ‘Honorary Citizen of Oslo 2015’, in Norwegian, (‘Årets Osloborger’, in Norwegian) was won by Mohsan Raja (30), a Norwegian of Pakistani heritage. He received the prize for voluntary work to organize care and help for the many newly-arrived Syrian and other refugees in Norway this year.

We are indeed proud of Mohsan and the 25-30 friends he mobilized – and we are proud of all the other Pakistanis who do so well in Norway. As a matter of fact, girls do better at secondary school than boys. But that may also be the case in Pakistan, too.

Let me say: “Pakistan-Norway cooperation Zindabad”

What steps are being taken for cultural exchanges between Pakistan and Norway?

Pakistan and Norway have quite a bit of cultural cooperation. Every summer, the international music festival ‘Oslo Mela’, is held in Oslo, and it was started and is run by a Pakistani-Norwegian, Saleem. I just heard that in 2016, they will also have concerts in Pakistan. Lok Virsa folk art museum in Islamabad has for many years had UNESCO assistance in music and other fields, with Norwegian funding.

I have also helped Pakistani universities establish linkages with Norwegian universities. University of Gujrat has been particularly interested in that, and finally, it seems they will now formalize their linkages.

Gujrat District is the main sending area of about 40,000 Pakistanis in Norway. I think as many as 30,000 come from there. They first started migrating in the late 1960s and now they are Norwegian citizens and have settled in Norway, mainly in the capital Oslo and nearby towns. Some have done very well and have become politicians, lawyers, doctors and so on.

How many books have you written? Are you planning to write more books?

I have written three books, which have been published in Pakistan. The largest one came in 2007 and it is almost 300 pages. Its title is ‘Learning Away from Home’. It is still available in Saeed Book Bank and Mr. Books in Islamabad.

I still learn about refugees, and I write a bit about them. Last year, I wrote a few articles for a book in Migration Studies, which was published by Quaid-e-Azam University, edited by Dr. Muhammad Hafeez, a good friend of Norway, travelling to Oslo at least once every year.

I recommend another book that I have written, ‘The Know Norway Book’, published in Islamabad and Gujrat. That book is also available in large bookshops in Pakistan. It is an overall introduction to Norway. One chapter is about Pakistanis in Norway.

What is the impact of Afghan refugees on Pakistan in your opinion?

Pakistan has always been a generous host to Afghan refugees; there are in the range of 2.7 million Afghan refugees and other Afghans in Pakistan. When refugees first arrive in a country, they cost the host country money to be given protection, housing and so on. After some time, refugees also contribute to the host country’s economy. Also, many refugees have relatives who work abroad, in Europe, America, UAE and other countries. They send money to their relatives, at home in Afghanistan and refugees in Pakistan. That is essential for the refugees and it is also positive for Pakistan. Afghan refugees are not allowed to do take jobs and do business in Pakistan, but they do small jobs as laborers, and they often have to undercut Pakistani workers to get the jobs. Afghans may also work in business together with Pakistanis, who have the formal company registrations.

How long you have been in Pakistan? Please share a few memories you have from Pakistan.

I came for the first time to Pakistan in 2000 to work with Afghan refugees in UNHCR and UNESCO. After 5 years, I worked on a research project, affiliated to Hazara University in Mansehra, to write the history of education for Afghans living in Pakistan, which resulted in the large book I mentioned earlier, and two shorter books as well, with assistance from Germany (GIZ) and the Norwegian Embassy.

I have enjoyed my time in Pakistan, and now I hope I can spend some more time here until I get my pension in Norway. I already have white hair, but I don’t feel old, and besides, Norwegians only get pension from 67. So what can be better than to be in Pakistan?

I also write articles for newspapers and magazines, and I do other research and writing, as I mentioned. Sometimes, I am interviewed on PTV World and I am invited to guest-lecture at universities and supervise students.

To be a social scientist is quite similar to being a journalist. We try to observe, collect information and understand the world around us. Journalists must be quick and move from one topic to another, often with little background in the specific fields. That is quite challenging. A social scientist who is doing research can spend more time on each topic, be more systematic and methodical.

You are founder of Pakistan-Norway Association (PANA). What is the aim of this organization?

Pakistan-Norway Association (PANA) is an international friendship association, which keeps the people-to-people contact warm. I was one of the initiator of PANA, together with Sociologist Farooq Khan and Professor Daud Awan, who were my classmates at the University of Oslo 30-40 years ago. Atilla Iftikhar Warraich from Stavanger was chairman some years ago, and now it is Dr. Ali Nawaz, who did his Ph.D. in environmental sciences at UMB outside Oslo. I believe in the importance of such little associations. In the future, they may become more important together with private sector companies.

Would you like to share any memorable event of your life?

There are so many stories to tell; I have very pleasant memories from my stays in Pakistan over so many years. But it is difficult to know what particular stories to tell.

Let me tell a story about one of my aunts, Helga, instead. Aunt Helda was my father’s sister; they were 10 boys and 3 girls in the family. Today the families are small, just 1-3 children. Her mother, my grandmother, married twice. Her first husband drowned at sea and she married his younger brother, a retired military man who was still a bachelor. When my grandmother died, quite early after all those childbirths, Aunt Helga had to ‘look after’ her father because she was not married, and in those days it was expected that she stayed with her father. He could not even boil a potato or make a cup of coffee – and if he could, he found it much better for himself if his daughter did it.

My grandfather became an old man and Aunt Helga was more than fifty when he passed away. She continued with her work as a dressmaker at home and then she took up work in a shop, which she took over when she was 62. Then at 67, like all Norwegians, also Norwegian women and men born in Pakistan, she received government pension. It was only then that my aunt finally got married!

I was a teenager that time, and with my two brothers, we had to ‘investigate the case’. We found out that she had grown up in the same village with her husband, but he had married someone else. Then in his late sixties, and a widower, he was free to marry again. In Norway, a man can only have one wife at a time.

Are there lessons to learn from such everyday stories?

As a social scientist, I find my aunt’s real life story very interesting. There is social history to learn from the story. In Pakistan, things might have been different, yet, also with similarities. We can learn a lot from everyday stories, especially if we use social science methods and comparisons to analyse them.

I hope in future, the social sciences can play a more important role in Pakistan. I believe that civil servants should have knowledge in the social sciences, even full degrees.  But the Pakistani universities must also make their degree courses relevant and practical. Students must learn how to analyse and think about society, and how they can work as civil servants. Broad, interdisciplinary knowledge is important, including contact with foreign countries.

His Excellency Zenén Buergo Concepción is the Ambassador of Republic of Cuba to Islamic Republic of Pakistan. During his so far stay in Islamabad, Ambassador Zenen has earned a lot of popularity not only amongst the socio-cultural circles of Pakistan due to immensely engaging in all social events but he is also very much respected in the Islamabad-based global diplomatic community for his extraordinary views of issues across the world. As a major development took place when United States resumed its diplomatic relations with Cuba and both Washington and Havana opened up their embassies in each other’s capitals after almost five decades, we arranged a special sitting with Ambassador Zenen to get his views not only on this historic development but also about Pakistan-Cuba relations and his experience about socio- cultural life in Pakistan that we are publishing for our valued readers.

Cuba & United States have restored Diplomatic relations after a long phase of immense tension. What do you think was the basic factor that eventually pushed Washington to restore diplomatic ties with Havana?

Let me give you the brief answer, in  my opinion, there were three main reasons behind this development;  The first reason, I think, was the resistance of Cuban people, we are a small island with only 11.2m people that have been suffering the biggest and longest blockade against any other country in the history of human being. As a small country, very close to the superpower, both we have been giving a sample of resistance that we are defending our country and our independence, we were and we are ready to make any kind of sacrifice in defense of our country. So the main reason was the constant and unshaken resistance by the Cuban people. The second one has been the unity between the people and government of Cuba. You are not to going to get anything if you are divided, Cuba, during all these years since the Cuban Revolution, remained united and the public remained fully behind its leadership in putting up this resistance. And the third one, in my opinion, was the Solidarity, international solidarity of many countries and many friends that Cuba has around the world and they have been helping Cuba. These are the main three factors that contributed mainly to this historic development.

What political and diplomatic gains will Havana likely be having with the restoration of these ties?

For many years the international community has been supporting Cuba regarding the blockade by the US. You remember that during the last 23 years we have been presenting resolutions in United Nation requesting to lift the blockade against Cuba. Last year 188 countries, almost all the international community were supporting this resolution, only two against, America and Israel. We have also presented a resolution against the blockade recently, last month on 27^th Oct, 2015 and this time 191 countries supported Cuba.

With reestablishing of diplomatic relations, our economical situation will increase, there are lots of countries sending commercial delegations to Cuba, even for investing in Cuba because we approved a new law for investment, now we are requesting to the foreign businessman to come to Cuba and help in developing our economy. Until now we have been improving our economy, in the last 3-4 years GDP has been increasing but it is not enough, we need more foreign capital, we want to improve the quality of life in Cuba. We sought to receive support and foreign investment, then of course there is another thing that will help, more people want to know about Cuba, it will increase tourism. Last year we had more than 3.1 million tourists but this year it will increase a lot because lot of people are visiting Cuba for many reasons. Cuba is a beautiful country, we have no problem with the security, people feel safe there. They feel they are going to see a country that has been putting up unprecedented resistance against all types of aggression and they want to know how these people are living, they want to know about the Cuban revolution. Cuba at the same is one of best country in education and health in the world. For instance, I would like to mention that the last report of World Bank in 2014 recognized that Cuba is best country in education in Latin America, despite the fact that we have not receive any loans from the World Bank. Then the Pope Frances made visit to Cuba in September, it was very successful visit, all of this situation of course will help to have a better condition.

We can say we will have normal relations with the US, the day it lifts the blockade, the day it returns Guantanamo Bay to the Cuban people.  In my opinion, in order to maintain normalize diplomatic relations, US must lift the blockade; returns Guantanamo Bay to Cuban people because it is territory that belongs to Cuba and to stop interfering in Cuba’s internal affairs.

What impact could these resumed diplomatic make on the case of Cuban-five?

Well, you know that in the Cuban-five already they have back in Cuba after restoration of diplomatic relations with Government of United States. US President announced that we are going to re-establish diplomatic relations on December 17^th, 2014. Cuban-five is one of the best example that I was telling you the resistance of Cuban people, they represent the base of Cuban people, they were in jail for many years but they resisted because they were showing the rest of the world that we have the right direction, that we are doing the right thing, defending our country. People outside tried to control Cuba, dominate Cuba and to tell us what we must do.

What development do you see will take place on Cuban economy, trade, health, education etc with the restoration of ties with Washington?

We are going to improve in a very consistent way; our development in the future will not depend on the relationship with United States, it will be something new, something that will help but we have relationships with so many countries in the world that they will help to improve our economy.

Of course it will be a support, it will increase the relationship, it will benefit both, we have something that we can sell to American market and we can receive something from the American market, I have many friends in United States, they visit Cuba only to explore the opportunities but they cannot make a deal because of the blockade. Then we are making a deal to improve our economy with some other countries those who don’t have problem with the blockade, we have a good relationship with all countries in Europe and we are improving. Now there is a delegation from our Ministry of Foreign Trade in the Middle East, we are increasing the relations with Saudi Arab, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, all of them are going to Cuba and like to invest in Cuba to improve our bilateral relations.

The situation we had before the revolution in 1959, at that time we had to depend on United States but that era is gone far. Let me give you for an example. Cuba was under full control of United States, they were the owner of Cuba. Only they would decide who will be the President, they supported the coup of Fulgencio Batista. The most important and most influential person in Cuba before 1959 used to be the American Ambassador. Sugar was the major good/product in our economy before 1959, we produce lot of sugar but we can’t sell it to American markets, at that time, only they (American) had to decide, you can sell sugar worth of $2m and not more than that. We sell brown sugar to United States then we buy white sugar because we don’t had refinery and this is an example of how our economy used to depend upon the United States. But this state of affairs has changed and now we have trade and economic relationship with all countries around the world and we are not going to leave this kind of relationship that we have established during all these years simply because we now have relationship with United States.

But I would like to add something more here; in this relationship, US can get benefit from Cuba. For instance, we receive the Governor Andrew Cuomo from New York a few months back. He visited Cuba along with a group of businessmen and they tried to know about the development of Cuba in the field of Bio-Technology that has been one of the priorities of Cuba. Now Cuba is one of the best countries in the world in this field.  Similarly, we have some medicines against cancers and United States doesn’t have those medicines. They have signed an agreement with Cuba and now very soon the American CDC may be improve the quality of life, may be they live longer because now they receive medicine against cancer.  

A small country with a population of only 11m, suffering a huge economic  blockade for more than 55 years, imagine it and now we have the medicine against cancer that the Super Power wants. I think we can collaborate with US in other fields too. The more important thing is that we can solve the difference in the most peaceful manner and through appropriate dialogue.

Our philosophy that I would like to mention here, is that at this moment we have around 65 thousand people working in 85 countries around the world that includes mainly the doctors and paramedical experts. We are sending these people to all of these countries to save lives whereas some other countries are sending soldiers with guns; gun is only used to kill people and that is the difference. We are saving life and they are trying to kill people. That is why we think the only solution that we have in this moment is to only collaborate to save humanity. I think the situation of Cuba will be much better in coming few years because Cuban people have been suffering a lot of restrictions but at the same time with limited resources we have established a quality society where education and health is free for every citizen. It will not be deducted from their salaries, you can have a family with 10 children and you don’t need a huge salary because may be you are not a professional but every child can go to school and study, they will get free education till university, all expenses are on State.

Some people say that now you have relationship with United States, may be you are going to change; of course we are going to change but we are going to change in a better way and we are going to change to consolidate our principle of justice, social equality and international solidarity.

What are your & your government’s expectations about Socio-Economic development of Cuba in the background of restored diplomatic relations with United States?

We are offering to have businessman from United States, already we have some commercial relationship but the conditions that they have established, we cannot improve our economic and commercial relationship with United States because they are not giving credit, we must have to pay in banks or cash. First condition in order to improve our bilateral relationship with United States in the field of economical and commercial field is to lift the blockade and to have a normal relationship as two independent countries, sovereignty countries, on the equal conditions, that is the base for a better relationship. We hope that in near future nobody know when they will lift the blockade, I think that the President Obama is using his executive power the make blockade easy before eliminating the full blockade. President Obama is requesting to American Congress to lift the blockade. We cannot improve our bilateral relations in Blockade, they are trying to find every company in the world that has relationship with Cuba, and it is a contradiction. They say that they want to improve and recognize Cuban Government but at the same time you have a knife in your coat. I want to be your friend with knife, how is that possible.

Fidel Castro has been maintaining a very stiff stance towards US, do you think there would be some major changes in Havana’s foreign policy with this latest development?

I would tell you that Fidel Castro had tried to have a very good relationship with United States in the beginning of the revolution. The first trip that Fidel made to United States was in April 1959, he received an invitation from the Association of Journalists of United States. He was talking to Legal Chief of United States that Cuba now is an independent country, Cuba now need the support and the aid of United States but in a different way. United States don’t understand and they decided confrontation and not to collaborate with this new government and then they took wave of aggression and tried to kill Fidel. There were conspiracies hatched to kill Fidel at more than 600 accessions and this is the information that you can’t get from Americans or other western media. We want to have a good relationship with United States but they don’t understand that the Cuban revolution was something new in Latin America that started to work for the majority of the people not for minority. They took the decision and tried to stop this revolution, to destroy this revolution, to kill Fidel. You remember Bay of Pig in 1961, they sent invasion to Cuba and they could not destroy the Cuban revolution because the majority of the people was supporting the revolution and that is the reason I was explaining the resistance, you cannot resist if you don’t have the support of majority of the people and if you are in minority then Cuba could have disappeared a long ago.

How do you see the future of Pakistan-Cuba relations and what are the areas where both countries could help each other in coming years?

You remember that a few days back, there was earthquake in Pakistan. At that time we were observing the 10^th anniversary of the earthquake in 2005, 14^th of October only 6 days after the earthquake, Cuba sent a group of doctors to help Pakistan. We were the first to arrive and we stayed here for 7 months and were the last to leave. 2600 people came here and we opened 32 field hospitals and then you can see how is it possible that this small country, not rich country, we don’t have national resources, people were surprised that how in this condition with blockade, Cuba could send 2600 people all the way to Pakistan and to stay there for 7 months and to open 32 hospitals freely and to bring technology and tons of medicines? We donated everything to the government of Pakistan, that is why we believe and we will continue working for international solidarity after the earthquake we gave a scholarship program to Pakistan. We gave 1000 students, fully funded scholarship program that has been the biggest scholarship program Pakistan has received from any other foreign country. First batch of Pakistani student under this scholarship program arrived in Cuba in 2007 and second batch in 2008. They stayed in Cuba for 7 years and studied medicine. They are back in Pakistan now. The last graduation was in February 2014 and second was this year and now they are in Pakistan. You have almost 1000 doctors of medicine, graduated from Cuba. Now after 7 years they are back in Pakistan and they are ambassador from Cuba in Pakistan because they know lot of things about Cuba, they love Cuba because it is almost their second house and now they are here talking about Cuba and now more Pakistani people know that Cuba is a friendly country of Pakistan and that Cuba has always been supporting Pakistan.

Just last month, we marked 60^th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Cuba. We signed diplomatic relations on 28^th October 1955. Before the revolution, we did not have relationship but since the 1955, Cuba sent first official delegation to Pakistan. Chief of that delegation was Che Guevara in 1959 who met with the then President of Pakistan Ayub Khan and the Foreign Affair Minister Manzur Qadir and we expressed that we would like to have good relationship with Pakistan. Though geographic distance between Pakistan and Cuba is very far but we are very close in our heart with Pakistan.

We have something that we signed in 2009, a government agreement for collaboration in economical, commercial and scientific field then we have a legal document to improve our bilateral relationship, in this way we are working. I can tell you that still the economical and commercial relationship is not what we like, on both sides we agree to work more to improve our bilateral relationship. I hope in near future we will have a better relationship. Until now one of the main thing that we have been doing was the scholarship program that finished this year. I have been working very close with Higher Education Commission (HEC). The chairman of the Higher Education Commission received an invitation to go Cuba, he will go in next February. It will be a very important visit because he will go to participate in International Conference of Higher Education in Cuba but at the same time he make a bilateral visit to explore and talk with our local authorities, to see how we can improve our relationship in field of higher education in scientific field, in agriculture even in biotechnology because he has plan to visit our biotechnology center then I think this visit that will be very soon in next 4 months will be very important for the future of our bilateral relationship, then we received the chairman of senate in 2012, we received the speaker in November 2014, now in National Assembly and Senate we have a friendship group with Cuba, we have in our Parliament a friendship group with Pakistan and all of these things are going to help to improve our bilateral relationship. We had been working in the commercial field, trying to receive from Cuba, Pakistani businessman can export goods to Cuba but still we are not very satisfied because in this particular situation, we are receiving some goods from Pakistan but mainly through the third country not direct and we would like to start direct commercial relationship with Pakistan, we would like to see if we can find some Pakistani businessman that can invest in Cuba because we have the new foreign law that we are giving opportunities and possibilities on very good condition to foreign businessman to invest in Cuba. Perhaps, some other field we are working is to improve our collaboration in national disaster, we are planning sign a government agreement cultural activities and to collaborate in National Library, Radio, TV. One important thing is economical and commercial collaboration, we are also talking about the collaboration in the health field, mainly to see if we can give our experience in care system that everybody in the world recognizes that Cuba is one of the best country in the health system.

What is the potential of increasing Pakistan-Cuba trade volume and in which areas?

Well! From Cuba we can increase the commercial bilateral relationship; we are interested to import surgical instruments, textile, sports good, rice etc. From Cuba we can export biotechnological pharmaceutical products, we can collaborate, we are increasing the export of Cigar to the markets of Pakistan. Lot of people love Cuban cigar and you know that the Cuban cigar is one of the best in the world. Very soon before the end of this year we are going to open for the first time a Cuban Cigar House here in Islamabad. Already a Pakistani businessman went to Cuba and discussed with the Havana’s company and made a joint-venture and that is the first joint-venture regarding cigar.

How do you see Cuba can benefit from China-Pakistan Economic Corridor?

Well! China is second partner already and we have a very good relationship with China. Everything that is good for Pakistan and China in the commercial field that will be good for us. I am sure that we will benefit because if Pakistan and China will improve the economy then there will be more opportunities to have relationship with some other countries and I am sure that Cuba will get benefit by the development of Pakistan. Already I know that Government of Pakistan would like to improve the relationship with Latin American countries and something that we are requesting is to use Cuba, it is a friendly country of Pakistan, go to Cuba for investment, from Cuba you can export to the north and the south because Cuba is in middle of Latin America.

How do you see the security situation in Pakistan especially after the launch of operation Zarb-e-Azb by Pakistan Army?

This is internal issue here. I have been here for 5 years and Cuba always has been supporting fight against terrorism and we fully support all people those are working for a peaceful and prosperous Pakistan. This is the position of Cuba and we recognize the sacrifice that Pakistan has made with regard to fighting the menace of terrorism. We know very well outbursts of terrorism because we also suffered it in Cuba and we know very well where these terrorists come from. The terrorism against Cuba was supported by Cuba’s foreign enemies and we lost so many people, just like you have suffered in Pakistan. In Cuba we lost more than 3500 people. Terrorist organizations have been receiving the support and funds from our hostile neighbor. A Passenger Fight was blasted with bomb while it was going to Cuba with group of some Cuban and foreigners. It was a terrorist attack in 1976 and everybody died and the terrorists those planned it, are still living in the countries like the US. We are against all kinds of terrorism, there are no good and bad terrorists, terrorist is only terrorist.

Situation is improving here now, I have been here for about 5 years and I have seen a lot of terror incidents. But now people feel more safe here, they are traveling more, making tours, going to different places. Attacks of terrorists have reduced now. Always we have been traveling to many places, for us always we feel safe here since the beginning. I really see it as a great achievement of Pakistan government and its security Forces the way they have successfully conducted the operation to eliminate the monster of terror.

Since media is considered as a major tool in promoting relations between the nations how do you see the possibility of media cooperation between Pakistani & Cuban Media for this purpose?

You know that already in last September we signed a MoU with a local Pakistani newspaper, they have been publishing many articles on Cuba and now we are talking with other newspapers to see if we can improve. I think that is good for both sides because here the people will receive more information and will know more about Cuba and in Cuba we can receive more information. We only receive the information that big media agencies produce and they control the information. For example I would tell you that people around the world have very negative image and news from Pakistan but information people is in the control of only 5 or 6 big news agencies, no direct information from Pakistan because you don’t have the opportunity disseminate information, it is controlled from United States, France, Germany and UK. I think we must do more to collaborate in media, I feel that in the last years we seen information on Cuba is increasing and I hope that we will receive more opportunities to give more information and people will receive more information about Cuba and we would like more information from Pakistan because the information from Pakistan we can only get through these big agencies and they are publishing a news only when something negative happens in Pakistan.. these Western news agencies don’t publish news when good and amazing things take place in Pakistan, you will never see a single news about traditional festival, news about the conferences in Pakistan Agricultural Research Center or when there is some important research emerges from Agriculture University of Faisalabad. it is very big university with more than 25,000 students, they don’t publish any news about COMSATS Institute of Technology, that is again a very good institution.

It has been quite some time that you are representing Cuba in Pakistan now. How has been the experience not only as a Diplomat but as a Cuban National in Pakistan and How have you found Socio-Cultural life here, since you traveled across many cities in Pakistan?

It has been a great experience in Pakistan right from the day one.  I have made lot of friends here. It is very easy to get inside the socio-cultural life of Pakistan because of the similarities between our people and how we receive the hospitality and the friendship of Pakistani people. Perhaps, you don’t have that much information in media but people to people they have been very close.

To increase our bilateral relations in cultural field, I remember that we brought for the first time a group of musicians in Pakistan, never before Cuba have sent a group of musicians and I was a little worried that how the people of Pakistan will receive Cuban music and they were 3 young people that came to work in National College of Arts in Lahore, teaching music at the same time and making a performance on Cuban songs. Well! They stayed here for almost 6 months, from September 2012 to March 2013 and they made 52 performances at TV, radio, universities, lot of schools. Something that was very good was that we brought a cigar roller for the first time in December 2013. For the first time a cigar roller came here, Pakistani people had never seen how to make a cigar, they came here with a lady and made cigars in front of the people and then she made a performance at Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad and she stayed in Pakistan for about one month.

I feel very well and very comfortable with Pakistani people. We have established a very friendly relationship that is the greatest experience after many other countries where I have been. It is an opportunity for me and my wife to know very great people, lovely people, people that respect Cuba and  at the same time they know that we are very far from Pakistan but we respect Pakistan and Cuba always will be supporting Pakistan as we have been working very closely for many years.
